To always keep your desktop Icons where you've placed them, do the following:
Control (right) click on your desktop and select Sort By: None
The second one is harder to do but here's how:
1) Turn off all Spaces in Mission Control settings
2) Switch your Finder View to either Column or List.
3) Spend some more time training App and Finder windows.
